Raiders GM John Spytek Holds Leverage in Maxx Crosby Trade Talks at Combine

INDIANAPOLIS — As NFL executives gather for the scouting combine, Las Vegas Raiders general manager John Spytek finds himself in an enviable position. The swirl of trade rumors surrounding defensive end Maxx Crosby has put the Raiders at the center of attention, but Spytek controls the narrative.

Crosby has not denied a report that he requested a trade, though he has expressed frustration with how the news surfaced. The 28-year-old pass rusher has been a Raider for his entire career, but losses, injuries, and a dispute over his playing time late last season have tested his loyalty. Still, the relationship may not be beyond repair.

“It’s very unlikely the relationship is completely irreparable,” one league source said.

Spytek can explore multiple paths. He could sign Crosby to a new contract, keeping the four-time Pro Bowler as a cornerstone for new defensive coordinator Rob Leonard, who has a close bond with Crosby. Or he could trade him, potentially accelerating a rebuild centered around presumed No. 1 pick Fernando Mendoza.

If Spytek opts for a trade, he expects a bidding war. The Raiders are reportedly seeking at least two first-round picks and a premium player. A rumored offer from Detroit — a first-round pick, wide receiver Jameson Williams, and possibly another pick — has drawn interest. Another proposal from ESPN suggested the Cowboys send George Pickens and a first-rounder for Crosby and a second-round pick. Chicago’s offer of a first-round pick and D.J. Moore seems less enticing.

Spytek can afford to be patient. Crosby is under contract on a deal that doesn’t hamper the team’s salary cap. If no offer meets the Raiders’ valuation, they can keep a superstar pass rusher who remains productive — 12 sacks in 2025 — and build around him.

“The shrimp cocktail should taste that much better for Spytek, who heads to Indianapolis in a position of power,” the source added.
