Marner’s OT heroics keep Canada alive, set up semifinal clash with Finland

Marner’s OT heroics keep Canada alive, set up semifinal clash with Finland

The men’s Olympic hockey quarterfinals delivered drama in Milan on Wednesday, with three of four games requiring extra time. Canada and the United States both escaped with overtime victories, keeping alive the possibility of a gold-medal showdown between the North American rivals.

Canada needed a comeback to defeat Czechia 4-3, thanks to a Mitch Marner overtime goal 1:22 into the extra period. Marner carried the puck through the neutral zone, eluded all three Czech defenders, and beat goaltender Lukas Dostal with a backhand. “Pretty special,” Marner said. “Cool to just contribute and make a play when you need it. There were so many big plays in that game that made it what it is.”

Czechia had taken a 3-2 lead with about seven minutes remaining on a goal by Ondrej Palat, assisted by Vegas Golden Knights forward Tomas Hertl—his first point of the tournament. The goal came after a rush that started with Hertl blocking a shot from defenseman Thomas Harley, though replays showed Czechia had six skaters on the ice during the play. Canada tied it with 3:27 left on a deflection by Nick Suzuki.

Marner’s overtime heroics echoed his performance in last year’s 4 Nations Face-Off, where he scored the winner against Sweden. “As a teammate, I haven’t experienced (Marner not being clutch),” said Knights captain Mark Stone, who played 15:29 with two shots and a minus-1 rating. “The 4 Nations, he gets a huge overtime goal for us, makes an incredible play for the winner. Then tonight, when we need him the most, he makes the play. So … I think it’s a Toronto thing.”

Canada will face Finland in the semifinals Friday at 7:30 a.m. Finland rallied from 2-0 down with six minutes left to beat Switzerland 3-2 in overtime, with Artturi Lehkonen scoring the winner at 3:23. Knights goaltender Akira Schmid was not the backup in that game; his tournament ends with a 5-1 loss to Canada in his only start.

USA edges Sweden on Hughes OT winner

The United States also needed overtime, defeating Sweden 2-1 on a goal by defenseman Quinn Hughes 3:27 into the extra period. Sweden had tied the game with 1:31 remaining on a goal by Mika Zibanejad after pulling goalie Jacob Markstrom. Knights forward Jack Eichel led all U.S. forwards with five shots, while defenseman Noah Hanifin played 5:46 and had one shot. Team USA will face Slovakia in the semifinals at noon Friday.

Slovakia advanced earlier Wednesday with a 6-2 win over Germany. Knights defenseman Rasmus Andersson was a healthy scratch for Sweden for the second straight game, ending his tournament with two games played and a minus-2 rating.

Five Golden Knights players remain in the medal round: Marner, Stone, Shea Theodore (Canada), Eichel, and Hanifin (USA). Hertl, Schmid, and Andersson will head back to Las Vegas.
