Bowers, Mayer Reflect on Kelce’s Impact Ahead of Possible Final Game vs Raiders

Las Vegas Raiders tight ends Brock Bowers and Michael Mayer grew up watching Travis Kelce revolutionize their position. Now they might witness the end of his Hall of Fame career Sunday when the Kansas City Chiefs visit Allegiant Stadium at 1:25 p.m.

Kelce, 35, has not officially announced retirement, but hints have surfaced. A disappointing Chiefs season and the absence of injured quarterback Patrick Mahomes could influence his decision.

“I have so much respect for him to be able to have that influence over the position to make it something kids want to do,” said Bowers, who is on injured reserve and will not play. “It used to be just a thing where someone was too big to be a receiver just stick them at tight end and now it’s a sought-after position. That’s pretty cool.”

Mayer, who developed a relationship with Kelce at Tight End University while at Notre Dame, echoed the sentiment. “Obviously one of the best to ever do it,” Mayer said. “If it is his last one, it’s going to be very, very cool to be able to share the field with him.”

Kelce has dominated the Raiders over his career, recording 131 catches for 1,636 yards and 12 touchdowns against them.

Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham called Kelce “a true competitor” and noted his consistency. “You have one year, two years, but, like, when you talk about somebody’s going to have a gold jacket, it was the consistency and how he brought his team along,” Graham said. “If it’s his last game, I hope it’s a terrible game.”

Bowers, often mentioned as Kelce’s heir apparent, said, “It’s an honor to be compared to guys like him. He’s someone I grew up watching. … Throughout high school and college, I watched him and tried to emulate some of the things he does.”

Injury report

Running back Raheem Mostert did not practice Thursday due to lingering knee and ankle issues after a full session Wednesday. Wide receiver Tyler Lockett was limited with a new shoulder injury but practiced fully. Rookie receiver Jack Bech practiced fully for a second straight day despite a back injury. Defensive tackle Adam Butler (biceps), guard Dylan Parham (illness) and quarterback Geno Smith (left ankle) all missed practice. Smith is not expected to play Sunday.

Friendly wager

Several Raiders players watched the College Football Playoff Orange Bowl on Thursday, with Oregon alum Jackson Powers-Johnson and Texas Tech grad Caleb Rogers especially invested. After Texas Tech’s loss, Rogers must wear an outfit of Powers-Johnson’s choosing on Friday.
