Golden Knights can clinch Pacific Division with a point Wednesday

The Vegas Golden Knights control their own destiny heading into the final game of the regular season. A single point against the Seattle Kraken on Wednesday would secure the Pacific Division title and home-ice advantage through the first two rounds of the playoffs.

After a 6-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Monday, the Knights have a nine-game point streak and are 6-0-1 under coach John Tortorella. The team has defied expectations after being four points out of a playoff spot when Bruce Cassidy was fired two weeks ago.

“I don’t think any of us would have expected to head into the last game of the year with the chance to win the division with the amount of points we had,” center Jack Eichel said. “But here we are.”

The Knights have not beaten the Kraken this season, and a regulation loss could drop them to third place if the Edmonton Oilers beat the Vancouver Canucks and the Anaheim Ducks win their final two games. The standings remain fluid, with the first-round opponent and travel destinations still undetermined.

“It’s huge,” defenseman Noah Hanifin said. “We’re just trying to keep building our game. I think we’re doing a lot of good things, and this is the time of year you got to be dialed in and all the details got to be clicking.”

Captain Mark Stone has been on a tear with four goals in the last three games, including a short-handed tally Monday. The Knights have found different ways to win under Tortorella, who emphasized a few key points since taking over.

“I just know it’s a good team and I knew it was a good team coming in,” Tortorella said. “I knew it was coached well prior to me. I have made a point of having some points of emphasis, probably three or four that I want to bring across to them. We’ve done that, and I think they feel good about themselves. When you win some games, you feel good about yourself and hopefully we keep on building on that.”

The Knights face the Kraken on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Pacific time at T-Mobile Arena.
