Vegas Golden Knights rookie center Kai Uchacz will make his NHL debut Wednesday against the Vancouver Canucks at T-Mobile Arena, filling in for injured left wing Jonas Rondbjerg.
Rondbjerg is week to week with a lower-body injury sustained Sunday against the Anaheim Ducks, coach Bruce Cassidy said Tuesday. The Knights placed him on injured reserve Monday, and he will miss the final two games before the Winter Olympic break: Wednesday’s matchup with the Canucks and Thursday’s game against the Los Angeles Kings.
Rondbjerg is set to represent Denmark at the Olympics, with the team opening against Germany on Feb. 12. Cassidy did not rule him out for the tournament. “I’m not sure how that’ll play out yet,” he said.
Uchacz, 22, was called up from Henderson on Tuesday. The undrafted forward from Calgary, Alberta, has six goals and 20 points in 39 games this season with the Silver Knights. He was fifth in scoring for Henderson last year in his first full pro season.
“High energy,” Cassidy said. “When he’s on, he’s physically engaged.”
Uchacz learned of the call-up Monday while at his apartment with roommate Ben Hemmerling. He told fellow roommate Braeden Bowman, who had been called up in November and had 19 points in 39 games. Bowman, who previously borrowed Uchacz’s truck when he didn’t have a car, returned the favor by driving Uchacz to practice with his new truck.
“It’s awesome,” Bowman said. “It’s been awhile since we’ve been on the same ice together.”
At practice, Uchacz centered the fourth line with Bowman on his right and Cole Reinhardt on left wing. Cassidy noted the familiarity between Uchacz and Bowman could help establish a forechecking identity. Right wing Alexander Holtz moved to the top line with Jack Eichel and Ivan Barbashev after Rondbjerg’s injury and performed well in the third period.
Uchacz expects at least eight family members to attend Wednesday’s game. “Just pure excitement,” he said. “Just grateful for this opportunity.”
