Pavel Dorofeyev scored both goals for the Vegas Golden Knights, but Jake Evans beat Akira Schmid with a backhand 1:02 into overtime, giving the Montreal Canadiens a 3-2 win Tuesday at Bell Centre.
The Knights (25-14-13) outshot Montreal 13-3 in the third period and tied the game with 3:08 left when Dorofeyev deflected a Ben Hutton point shot past Jakub Dobes. It was Dorofeyev’s team-leading 24th goal of the season and his eighth in the last nine games.
“We were down going into the third, and we’ve done a good job this year getting ourselves back in the game,” coach Bruce Cassidy said. “We’re never out of it, so that’s a positive.”
Vegas controlled the first period, with Dorofeyev forcing a turnover at the defensive blue line and beating Dobes glove side at 8:38. But Montreal answered in the second period. Phillip Danault deflected a shot past Schmid at 4:24 to tie it, and Cole Caufield scored at 8:55 to give the Canadiens a 2-1 lead.
Schmid made 23 saves, including several big stops on Caufield. The Canadiens (29-17-7) had a goal disallowed earlier in the second when Caufield’s power-play one-timer found the net despite his stick shattering, but Montreal was offside on the entry.
The road trip ended 1-2-1 for Vegas, which lost for the fourth time in five games. The Knights scored 12 goals in four games, with six coming in one win. Their power play went 0-for-3 Tuesday and 1-for-10 on the trip.
“I thought it was a good game,” Cassidy said. “There was a lot to like.”
