RALEIGH, N.C. — The script flipped on the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final. The team known for late-game heroics watched the Carolina Hurricanes storm back for a 4-3 overtime victory at Lenovo Center on Thursday night, tying the series at one game apiece.
For 50 minutes, the Golden Knights looked in control. They led 2-0, winning puck battles and outmuscling the Hurricanes on their own ice. Goaltender Carter Hart was on the verge of his first shutout of the postseason. But then the Hurricanes found their forecheck.
Carolina scored twice in a two-minute span to tie the game. The pivotal moment came with five minutes left in the third period. Knights coach John Tortorella challenged a play where the puck appeared to cross the goal line under Frederik Andersen but was not called a goal. The challenge failed, giving Carolina a power play, and Jordan Staal scored to put the Hurricanes up 3-2.
“I saw a loose puck in front of (Andersen) and our player stab at it,” Tortorella said. “It didn’t move the goalie. It goes through to the other side. I’d challenge it 10 out of 10 times.”
Mark Stone tied the game with 1:21 remaining, using his hand-eye coordination to backhand the puck past Andersen. But in overtime, Seth Jarvis scored on the power play to give Carolina the win.
The Golden Knights also lost defenseman Brayden McNabb in the first period after he took a puck to the face blocking a shot. He was transported to a local hospital, leaving Vegas with five defensemen for the remainder of the game. The shortened bench appeared to wear down as Carolina pressed.
“It’s terrifying,” forward Mitch Marner said. “Hopefully, he’s all good. I thought the five guys did a good job. Look — we’re in the Stanley Cup Final. This was never going to be easy.”
Game 3 shifts to Las Vegas on Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena. The series is now a best-of-five.
