Houston is getting a WNBA team back. The Connecticut Sun have been sold to Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta for $300 million and will relocate to Houston in 2027, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press on Friday.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the sale has not been announced publicly. The WNBA Board of Governors must still approve both the sale and the move. The Sun will play the upcoming season in Connecticut before becoming the Comets in Houston.
Fertitta, who also owns the Golden Nugget casinos in Las Vegas and Laughlin and is the largest stakeholder in Wynn resorts, had previously expressed interest in buying the team. Houston was one of several groups that bid last year, eventually raising its offer to $250 million — matching the expansion fees paid by Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia.
The sale ends a 23-year run in New England for the franchise, which moved to Connecticut from Orlando in 2003. The Sun had an offer of $325 million from a group led by Celtics minority owner Steve Pagliuca that would have moved the team to Boston, but the WNBA effectively blocked that deal, stating that “relocation decisions are made by the WNBA Board of Governors and not by individual teams.” The league added that other teams had gone through the expansion process and held priority over Boston.
WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert previously indicated during a news conference announcing three new expansion teams that Houston was next in line. The Houston Comets were one of the league’s original franchises, winning the first four WNBA championships from 1997 to 2000 before disbanding after the 2008 season.
The last WNBA team to relocate was the Las Vegas Aces, who moved from San Antonio in 2017. The clarity of the Sun’s sale and move could also influence free-agent decisions when the signing period opens next month.
