The Las Vegas Aces are poised to make A’ja Wilson the highest-paid player in WNBA history, with the four-time MVP expected to sign a supermax contract worth $1.4 million, according to sources. The deal comes on the heels of a new collective bargaining agreement reached early Wednesday after eight days of negotiations in New York.
Wilson, who led the Aces to three championships in four years, has been playing on team-friendly contracts to help build a winning roster. Her previous two-year extension signed in 2023 paid just $200,000 annually, far below the league’s top earners. Last season, teammates Jewell Loyd ($249,000 supermax), Alysha Clark, and Kelsey Plum all made more than Wilson.
The new CBA, once ratified, will raise the salary cap from $1.4 million to $7 million, enabling the Aces to reward Wilson appropriately. Coach Becky Hammon, who earned $25,000 as a rookie player, became the league’s first million-dollar coach in 2022. Now Wilson will join her as a million-dollar earner.
Wilson’s resume is unmatched: she is the only player to win MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, Finals MVP, and the scoring title in a single season. She also matches NBA legend Bill Russell with three MVPs and three championships in four years.
Despite rumors of other teams courting her, Wilson has been adamant about staying in Las Vegas. “I think everyone knows where my heart is,” she said. “And my heart’s always going to be in Vegas. So if I leave here, it’s because they sent me away.”
Free agency, delayed by CBA talks, will begin once the agreement is ratified. Wilson is one of 80 percent of the league’s players entering free agency this offseason.
