Raiders still need WR help, OL depth after free agency spending spree

The Las Vegas Raiders have roughly $35 million in cap space after the first week of NFL free agency, but the roster still has clear holes. General manager John Spytek and new coach Klint Kubiak have addressed several positions, but work remains before the draft.

Wide receiver stands out as the biggest need. The Raiders added speed by signing former Bishop Gorman star Jalen Nailor, but they lack a big, physical target who can win contested catches and serve as a red-zone threat. Such a player would take pressure off tight end Brock Bowers and help presumed No. 1 pick Fernando Mendoza.

On the offensive line, center Tyler Linderbaum was the top priority and the Raiders paid heavily to land him. With Kolton Miller returning healthy at left tackle and young players like Jackson Powers-Johnson, Caleb Rogers, Charles Grant, and DJ Glaze developing, the unit could become a strength. But adding a legitimate starting right tackle would solidify the group.

At cornerback, veteran Taron Johnson and re-signed Eric Stokes provide a solid start, but depth is thin. The Raiders may need another potential starter opposite Johnson, as Darien Porter and Decamerion Richardson are unproven.

Quarterback is another area of focus. Mendoza is expected to be the top pick, but Spytek and Kubiak have said they prefer not to start him immediately. Aidan O’Connell could serve as a bridge, but the organization would like to sign a veteran mentor.

On the defensive line, the Raiders added Kwity Paye and retained Malcolm Koonce before Maxx Crosby returned. The group has bodies, but a true playmaking nose tackle could elevate the unit. Safety is decent with most of last year’s group returning, though one more playmaker would help. Running back is a need for a complementary back to Ashton Jeanty, but the team can address that later in free agency or the draft.
