The New York Jets are bringing Geno Smith back to where his NFL career began. The Raiders traded the quarterback to the Jets on Tuesday in exchange for a sixth-round pick (No. 208 overall) in the upcoming draft, also sending a seventh-round pick (No. 228) to New York.
Las Vegas had planned to release Smith if no trade materialized, but the two teams struck a deal that sends the 34-year-old signal-caller to the team that drafted him in the second round back in 2013. To facilitate the trade, the Raiders agreed to pay the bulk of Smith’s salary, and Smith accepted a restructured contract.
The move clears roughly $2 million in additional cap space for the Raiders this year, plus adds $1.3 million to this year’s cap — money that would have been credited to 2027 had Smith been released. The Jets will pay Smith $3.3 million in 2026.
Smith spent his first four NFL seasons with the Jets before bouncing to the Giants, Chargers, and Seahawks. He joined the Raiders last March via a trade for a third-round pick and was named the starter. In 2025, he threw for 3,025 yards and 19 touchdowns against 17 interceptions in a campaign that ended with Las Vegas owning the No. 1 overall pick.
The Raiders are expected to select Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza with that top pick in April.
Raiders retain Booker, Meredith
In other roster moves Tuesday, the Raiders tendered restricted free agents Thomas Booker IV and Jordan Meredith. Booker, a defensive lineman coming off a breakout season, received an original round tender worth $3.674 million. Any team signing him would have to surrender a fifth-round pick. Offensive lineman Jordan Meredith got a standard tender worth $3.52 million, giving the Raiders the right to match any offer sheet.
