The Raiders are moving on from their longest-tenured kicker. Sources told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that the team has agreed to terms with free agent Matt Gay, a move that effectively ends Daniel Carlson’s time in Las Vegas.
Carlson, a free agent, is the second remaining link to the franchise’s Oakland days to depart in the past week, following Maxx Crosby’s trade to Baltimore on Friday. Only punter AJ Cole and offensive tackle Kolton Miller remain from that era. Carlson leaves as the No. 2 all-time leading scorer in Raiders history.
Gay, 31, struggled last season, making just 17 of 23 field goal attempts while kicking for the Washington Commanders and San Francisco 49ers. However, he has connections to the Raiders’ new leadership. Gay kicked for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2019 when general manager John Spytek worked in their front office, and he played for new special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis with the Los Angeles Rams during his most productive seasons in 2021 and 2022.
