Raiders working to keep cornerback Eric Stokes off free agent market

INDIANAPOLIS — The Las Vegas Raiders are in active discussions to retain their top cornerback, Eric Stokes, before free agency opens. General manager John Spytek confirmed the team has had productive talks with Stokes and expects to continue negotiations during the NFL Combine this week.

Stokes, a former first-round pick of the Green Bay Packers, joined the Raiders last offseason on a one-year, $3.5 million deal after four injury-marred seasons. He rebounded to start 16 games, becoming the secondary’s most consistent performer.

“I thought he played well this year,” Spytek said. “He was healthy and he had a good 16 games this year. Super happy with him. He competed and did what I knew he was capable of doing. I’d love to keep him around.”

The Raiders’ depth at cornerback is thin beyond Stokes. Decamerion Richardson, Darien Porter, Greedy Vance, and Chigozie Anusiem are under contract, while Bishop Gorman alum Kyu Blu Kelly is an exclusive rights free agent.

Spytek was less specific about other pending free agents, including longtime kicker Daniel Carlson.

“We’re talking to all of our guys’ agents this week,” Spytek said. “We’ll have a better feel coming out (of Indianapolis).”
