Melvin Returns to A’s Front Office as Special Assistant

The Athletics have brought back a familiar face, announcing Thursday that Bob Melvin will serve as a special assistant in baseball operations. The 64-year-old, who managed the team to three AL West titles from 2011-21, will advise the front office.

Melvin, a two-time AL Manager of the Year with the A’s (2012, 2018), compiled an 853-764 record in Oakland and led the club to six playoff appearances. Only Connie Mack, with 3,582 wins for the Philadelphia Athletics from 1901-50, has more victories in franchise history.

After leaving the A’s following the 2021 season, Melvin managed the Padres for two years and then the Giants. San Francisco fired him after an 81-81 campaign last season, the team’s fourth straight year without a playoff berth. Over 22 seasons as a manager, Melvin owns a 1,678-1,588 record, ranking 20th all-time in wins. He also won NL Manager of the Year with Arizona in 2007.

The Athletics are relocating to Las Vegas, where their new stadium on the Strip is set to open in two years.

Melvin played 692 big-league games as a catcher over 10 seasons (1985-94), spending the most time with his hometown Giants (265 games from 1986-88).
