Super Bowl win offers blueprint for how Klint Kubiak will build Raiders offense

Klint Kubiak is coming to Las Vegas with a Super Bowl ring and a clear offensive identity. The Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator, set to be introduced as the Raiders’ next head coach this week, called the plays in Seattle’s 29-13 victory over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 60 on Sunday.

“I’m just going to enjoy my family and enjoy being Seahawks tonight,” Kubiak told NFL Network after the game. “We’re going to enjoy tonight. You guys know I’m going to Las Vegas. I’m fired up about it. … Hell, yeah, I’m going. Of course, I’m going.”

The win showcased Kubiak’s commitment to the run game. Running back Kenneth Walker III rushed 27 times for 135 yards and was named Super Bowl MVP. Seattle kicked a record five field goals, but the ground game set up quarterback Sam Darnold’s play-action pass to AJ Barner for the team’s only touchdown.

“I know we won the Super Bowl but we could have been a little better on offense,” Darnold said. “I don’t care about that right now. It’s an unbelievable feeling. I’m just so happy for the guys in the locker room and the coaches who put in so much effort for the whole season. … Our running game was special tonight.”

For Raiders fans, the performance offers a glimpse of what Kubiak will bring to a team that went 3-14 last season. Running back Ashton Jeanty has already expressed excitement about Kubiak’s scheme, which relies heavily on the ground game. The Raiders will need to improve their offensive line to maximize Jeanty’s potential, a task for general manager John Spytek and minority owner Tom Brady.

Kubiak will also likely work with rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza, the projected No. 1 overall pick. The coach’s work with Darnold — a quarterback on his fifth team who thrived under Kubiak — provides hope for Mendoza’s development.

“I’m really happy for Klint,” Seattle coach Mike Macdonald said on NFL Network. “Without him, we wouldn’t be here. Just being bought into what we wanted to create. Bringing that to the offense every day. So steadfast in his approach. It’s team first and that’s what I appreciate about him. Obviously, he’s a brilliant mind. He’s a great coach. … Happy for Klint.”

One potential addition for the Raiders: Seahawks defensive coordinator Aden Durde, whose defense produced a dominant Super Bowl performance. Durde could call defensive plays in Las Vegas.
