SLAM! Nevada’s wrestling dynasty continued Saturday at Spring Valley High School, as the Bulls claimed their fifth consecutive 5A Southern Region team title with a dominant 323-point performance. The team had already secured the championship before the finals began, sending 12 wrestlers to the title matches across 14 weight classes.
Senior Brenden Agcaoili, a four-time region champion, added another milestone to his resume: his 200th career victory. The North Dakota State commit won the 138-pound final by decision over Preston Malkin of Foothill. “It feels great,” Agcaoili said. “It feels like a huge steppingstone, big milestone, kind of crazy. Four years of high school has been a ride for sure. This is a great milestone for me. I’m super proud of myself. The hard work is showing.”
Agcaoili missed time earlier this season with an injury, according to coach Jake Rollans. “He’s an outstanding young man,” Rollans said. “He missed some time, so I’m glad he was able to hit the milestone 200 wins.”
Ten Bulls won individual region titles: Vander Tran (106), Kash Moore (113), Destin Maestas (120), Frank Soliz (132), Agcaoili (138), Anthony Delgado (144), Drake Hooiman (150), Isaac Balden (157), Santiago Cabrera (175), and Satoshi Davis (215). Hooiman, like Agcaoili, is now a four-time region champion. Both will seek four individual state titles next week in Winnemucca, a feat achieved by only 42 wrestlers in NIAA history.
“Ever since freshman year, that’s been the goal. Since day one, four-time state champion,” Agcaoili said. “It’s never left my mind once. That’s still the goal. One more week, season’s over and I want to go out with a bang.”
Rollans praised the team’s chemistry. “This group has been extremely tight,” he said. “They really came together as a family. We travel a lot together, so they spend a lot of time together and they really have each other’s back, and you see them mat side cheering each other on, building each other up. That’s where our strength really comes from.”
Liberty finished second with 157 points, followed by Foothill with 156. Green Valley had two individual champions: Daniel Leal (190) and Matthew Stosek (165). Sierra Vista’s Edward Gonzalez (285) and Aidan Hernandez (126) also won titles; Hernandez previously won the 4A title at 120 pounds last year.
The top six in each weight class advance to the 5A state tournament at the Winnemucca Events Center, which begins Friday. Winnemucca will also host the 3A, 2A, and girls state meets. SLAM! Nevada will aim for its fifth straight state title.
“We felt good. Definitely some places where we can improve and get better,” Rollans said. “We’ll get back in the room on Monday (for) little tweaks to get ready for next week.”
In other region results: Las Vegas High won the 4A Desert Region title with 266 points, Desert Oasis claimed the 4A Mountain Region crown with 233.5 points, Pahrump Valley took the 3A Southern Region title, and White Pine won the 2A Southern Region championship.
