Rondbjerg’s Olympic Dream Hangs in the Balance After Lower-Body Injury

Rondbjerg’s Olympic Dream Hangs in the Balance After Lower-Body Injury

Vegas Golden Knights forward Jonas Rondbjerg’s potential Olympic debut for Denmark is now uncertain after he suffered a lower-body injury Sunday night against the Anaheim Ducks. The 26-year-old left wing was placed on injured reserve Monday, ruling him out of Vegas’s final two games before the Winter Olympic break.

Rondbjerg was hurt with 2:18 remaining in the second period when Ducks captain Radko Gudas appeared to catch his leg into the end wall. Rondbjerg was slow to get up and did not return for the third period of Vegas’s 4-3 loss, the team’s fifth straight defeat.

“It didn’t look good,” Knights coach Bruce Cassidy said after the game.

Rondbjerg had just made his season debut with the Golden Knights on Jan. 23 in Toronto after being called up from Henderson of the AHL, where he had 23 points in 36 games. He was playing on the third line with Tomas Hertl and Keegan Kolesar, making a strong impression with his forechecking and improving offensive play. He recorded two shots Saturday against Seattle and had a quality scoring chance in the first period Sunday.

Rondbjerg was one of the first six players named to Denmark’s Olympic team last June, and his call-up came at the perfect time for the tournament in Italy. He is one of nine Knights players scheduled to represent their countries at the Olympics.

“The Olympics are right around the corner, so that’s going to be a tough one if it’s of any length, but I don’t know if it’s going to be of any length,” Cassidy said. “I hope not, for his sake. He’s a great kid and it’s an opportunity to represent his country, so hopefully it’s short term.”

Rondbjerg’s absence will be felt as the Knights close out their pre-Olympic schedule against Vancouver and Los Angeles.
