Floyd Mayweather Jr. confirmed Saturday that his September 19 bout with Manny Pacquiao will now be an exhibition rather than a sanctioned professional fight, and that the venue is no longer guaranteed to be Sphere in Las Vegas.
The 49-year-old Mayweather made the announcement during an autograph signing at MCM inside the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace. “We don’t know exactly where the fight is going to be at,” he said. “We don’t know the location of the fight. The Sphere is one of the places that they talked about. So, we don’t know if it’s 100 percent going to be there. And this is not actually a fight, it’s an exhibition.”
The fight was originally announced as a sanctioned rematch of their 2015 bout, which Mayweather won by unanimous decision at the MGM Grand Garden. That event drew 16,219 fans and generated a $72 million gate. Pacquiao (62-8-3, 39 KOs) had been seeking to hand Mayweather (50-0, 27 KOs) his first professional loss, with the bout scheduled to stream live on Netflix.
Mayweather, who has not taken significant damage in his career, said he is comfortable fighting exhibitions as he approaches 50. “(I’m) still extremely healthy, I work out every day and I got an exhibition with Mike Tyson also, another exhibition in Greece,” he said. “So if I’m just sitting at home and I’m just working out every day, spending time with my grandson and spending time with my children, I said, ‘Why not go out, have a little fun, entertain and put on some exhibitions?’ So that’s been enjoyed.”
