WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Houston Astros pounded out 18 hits and routed the Athletics 11-0 on Saturday, with right-hander Tatsuya Imai striking out nine over 5 2/3 innings in his first win of the season.
Christian Walker went 3-for-5 with a solo homer, a double, three runs scored and two RBIs. Joey Loperfido, Yainer Diaz and Christian Vázquez each collected three hits as Houston matched its season high in runs.
Jeremy Peña opened the game with a double and scored on José Altuve’s RBI single. Walker later added an RBI single in the first to make it 2-0. He led off the third with a home run to left-center, his first of the year. Vázquez doubled home Jake Meyers later in the inning for a 4-0 lead.
The Astros broke it open in the fourth. Loperfido hit a ground-rule double scoring Carlos Correa, and Diaz delivered a two-run single to push the lead to 7-0.
Peña led off the fifth with a line-drive single up the middle for the 600th hit of his career. Loperfido added an RBI single in the sixth, Vázquez doubled in another run, and Yordan Alvarez singled home a run to make it 10-0. Cam Smith capped the scoring with a solo homer in the eighth.
Imai (1-0) allowed three hits and three walks while throwing 95 pitches. The Athletics managed only five hits and went 0-for-2 with runners in scoring position. Luis Morales (0-2) took the loss, surrendering five runs, eight hits, and six walks over 4 1/3 innings.
The Athletics plan to relocate to Las Vegas in 2028, when their new ballpark on the Strip is scheduled to open.
Houston sends RHP Lance McCullers Jr. (1-0, 1.29 ERA) to the mound Sunday against LHP Jacob Lopez (0-1, 6.75 ERA) in the series finale.
