Tylene Tran avenges loss, leads Centennial to second straight region wrestling title

Centennial’s girls wrestling team claimed its second consecutive Southern Region team championship Saturday at Clark High School, powered by individual titles from four Bulldogs and a key redemption win for senior Tylene Tran.

The Bulldogs amassed 203.5 points to outpace SLAM! Nevada (177.5) and Coronado (167). Tran, who lost to Virgin Valley’s Raylynn Woods in the 110-pound finals at both region and state last year, reversed that result with a tense victory that went to the final seconds of the third round.

“It was a super intense match. We were super close,” Tran said. “But I was able to stay calm and stay composed, and I think that’s what ultimately got me to that title for regionals.”

Tran was one of four Centennial wrestlers to win individual titles, joining Kaydyn Brooks (100 pounds), Madison Worden (140) and Liliana Barrientos (170). Worden won the state title last year at 135 pounds. Tran, Brooks and Barrientos are all now two-time region champions seeking their first state titles.

Centennial coach Kevin Caruso praised the team’s consistency. “It’s great,” he said. “It’s really hard to do it once, but to do it twice is awesome. It’s amazing.”

SLAM! Nevada also produced four individual champions: Kaliya Klise (105), Noelani Lutz (120), Mika Yoffee (135) and Nichole Simmons (145). Lutz and Yoffee each earned their third consecutive region title and will aim for their third state championships.

The top six finishers in each weight class advance to the state invitational on Feb. 13-14 at the Winnemucca Events Center. This is the fourth year of the girls wrestling state invitational, which includes all classifications; the sport will become a full-sanctioned NIAA event next school year.

Green Valley’s Kaija Ashcroft won her second straight region title at 190 pounds and is seeking her first state title.
