INDIANAPOLIS — Las Vegas Raiders general manager John Spytek outlined a deliberate philosophy for developing rookie quarterbacks on Tuesday at the NFL scouting combine, signaling that even a potential No. 1 pick like Fernando Mendoza might not start immediately.
“I think you want to limit the amount of pressure you have on that guy from the start,” Spytek said. “Now, if you have a young quarterback, I’m not necessarily in favor of running him out there right away, so (it’s important to have) another quality player that can play the quarterback position.”
Spytek’s comments come as the Raiders hold the No. 1 pick in April’s draft, with Indiana’s Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Mendoza widely projected to be selected by Las Vegas. Spytek described the ideal quarterback traits as “a leader and someone tough as hell,” “maniacal preparer,” and possessing “great humility and selflessness.”
However, Spytek stopped short of committing to Mendoza, noting the team would at least listen to trade offers. “We’re looking for leadership traits,” he said. “Can he be a connector? Is he smart? Is he endearing? Does he have humility? … We’re going to get 18 minutes to spend with these guys this week in those formal interviews.”
Spytek and Raiders executives watched Mendoza lead Indiana to a national championship, but NFL rules prevented any direct contact at the game. Spytek said he has reviewed game tape, especially from high-stakes playoff matchups.
“You have to support them in many different ways,” Spytek said of developing a young quarterback. “To think you’re just going to take a young quarterback and start him Week 1 and it’s going to go great is naive. You’re not doing that kid any favors at all.”
Spytek also revealed he has not spoken with veteran quarterback Geno Smith since the season ended. Smith remains under contract, but the Raiders can save about $8 million against the salary cap by releasing him before the third day of the new league year starting March 11.
“I have not talked to Geno since the season ended,” Spytek said. “I’ve seen videos of him training, and I know he’s feeling good. We’ll talk soon.”
Quarterback prospects, including Mendoza, are scheduled to address the media Friday; Mendoza is not expected to throw Saturday.
