The Las Vegas Raiders are expected to release quarterback Geno Smith barring a trade in the next week, ending his brief tenure as the team’s starter after a 3-14 campaign.
Smith, 35, was acquired from Seattle last March for a third-round pick and signed a two-year, $75 million contract extension. He threw for 3,025 yards, 19 touchdowns and 17 interceptions in 15 games. According to NFL data analyst Anthony Reinhard, the $58.5 million earned by Smith from the Raiders is the most for any player to take the field in only one season.
With the Raiders holding the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft and expected to select quarterback Fernando Mendoza, moving on from Smith opens a fresh start. General manager John Spytek told reporters at the NFL combine last week he had not been in communication with Smith. New coach Klint Kubiak, who briefly worked with Smith in Seattle, had left the door open but said, “(We are) looking at all options right now.”
Releasing Smith before March 13 saves $8 million in cap space while carrying an $18 million dead cap hit. The Raiders also released veteran offensive lineman Alex Cappa, 31, who signed a two-year, $11 million deal last offseason but made little impact.
Smith reacted on X: “God is the GREATEST. THANK U LORD.”
