Raiders’ next head coach Klint Kubiak: 5 facts beyond the football bloodline

The Las Vegas Raiders are finalizing a deal with Klint Kubiak to become their fifth head coach in five years, a move that won’t be official until after the Super Bowl. The 38-year-old Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator brings a rich football pedigree and a track record of offensive turnarounds. Here are five key facts about Kubiak.

1. Football family tree

Kubiak is the eldest son of former Houston Texans and Denver Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak. His brothers Klay and Klein also work in football — Klay as the 49ers’ offensive coordinator, Klein as a Dallas Cowboys scout. Gary Kubiak, who owns four Super Bowl rings, gave one to each son. He also hired Klint as a Broncos offensive assistant in 2016, giving him his first NFL break.

2. NFL dreams

Despite his coaching lineage, Kubiak didn’t grow up dreaming of calling plays. He played safety at Colorado State from 2005-09, serving as a senior captain. He earned an invitation to the East-West Shrine Game but never made it to the NFL as a player.

3. Long resume

Kubiak’s coaching career spans 16 seasons, including stops at Texas A&M and Kansas. He has held offensive coordinator roles with the Vikings (2021), Saints (2024), and now the Seahawks. He also served as passing game coordinator for the 49ers (2023) and Broncos (2022). He’ll lead Seattle against the New England Patriots in his first Super Bowl as an offensive play-caller, his third Super Bowl overall.

4. Player’s coach

Kubiak orchestrated a massive offensive upgrade in Seattle, lifting the unit from 18th in scoring (22.1 points per game) in 2024 to 3rd (28.4) in 2025. “Guys love him,” wideout Cooper Kupp said. “You want to play for guys like Klint.” With Kubiak’s help, quarterback Sam Darnold threw for 4,048 yards (fifth in the NFL) and 25 touchdowns. Wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba led the league with 1,793 receiving yards and is the favorite for Offensive Player of the Year. Running back Kenneth Walker posted his second 1,000-yard season, and backup Zach Charbonnet set a career high with 730 yards.

5. Shanahan influence

Kubiak has deep ties to 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, whom San Francisco general manager John Lynch called a “sponge” around Shanahan. The two go back decades — Shanahan once babysat Kubiak and, as the story goes, got so annoyed that he hung Kubiak from a doorknob by his underwear. “I’ve heard that story from so many people, it’s probably true,” Kubiak told the New Orleans Times-Picayune. “I don’t remember it, but I’m not going to refute it.”
