INDIANAPOLIS — Zachariah Branch’s NFL combine performance has only intensified the buzz around the former Bishop Gorman standout, who met with his hometown Raiders during the event. The wide receiver, who played at USC and Georgia, is the great-nephew of Raiders Hall of Famer Cliff Branch.
Branch, 5-foot-9 and 177 pounds, earned a spot on the NFL.com all-combine team after running the 40-yard dash and going through drills. He said one of his favorite parts was individual team meetings, including with the Raiders.
“Meeting with the Raiders was really cool,” the Las Vegas native said. “We talked about Cliff and the history and my family.”
The interview began with the Raiders’ brass projecting an image of a young Branch with track medals. “The first thing you see is that there aren’t too many bronzes,” Branch said, laughing. “Lots of gold and silver there. I had a good time with the hometown team.”
Branch is already listed in analyst Daniel Jeremiah’s top 50 players, and his combine showing is likely to boost his stock. “He’s at his best with the ball in his hands,” Jeremiah wrote. “He’s elusive and has dynamic long speed.”
Branch’s father, Sheva, a former San Jose State fullback, has trained him since childhood. “I feel like I’ve been a pro since I was in middle school,” Branch said. He also emphasized his dedication to studying the game: “I take notes on everything I hear from coaches no matter how many times I’ve heard it.”
The Raiders are in need of a playmaking receiver, and Branch believes he can fill that role. “I’m one of one,” he said. “You won’t find me anywhere else.”
