The Las Vegas Raiders enter free agency with a league-high $120 million in cap space and a glaring hole on the edge after trading Maxx Crosby to the Ravens. General manager John Spytek can address multiple defensive needs when the legal tampering period opens Monday.
The Raiders’ most pressing need is edge rusher. The trade of Crosby, a three-time Pro Bowler, leaves a void that must be filled immediately. The free-agent class is deep, with names like Trey Hendrickson, Jaelan Phillips, Odafe Oweh, Boye Mafe, and Joey Bosa available. Phillips, 27, offers positional versatility and could be the ideal fit. Oweh finished last season strong. Mafe, Joseph Ossai, and AJ Epenesa are disruptive options, while Arnold Ebiketie fits new defensive coordinator Rob Leonard’s scheme. The Raiders could also consider re-signing Malcolm Koonce, who is another year removed from knee surgery.
Cornerback is another high-priority position. The team is likely to lose Eric Stokes, their top priority among their own free agents, after he outperformed a one-year prove-it deal. If Stokes departs, the Raiders will target Alontae Taylor, Tariq Woolen, Jaylen Watson, Greg Newsome, or Jamel Dean. Taylor plays mostly in the slot but offers versatility. Klint Kubiak, the new offensive coordinator, has familiarity with Woolen from their time together in Seattle. Spytek knows Dean from their shared tenure in Tampa Bay. Watson could be a name to watch.
Linebacker is a need after the team switched to a 3-4 base defense. The Raiders are thin at the position but may use exotic looks like 3-3-5. Top free agents include Quay Walker, Tremaine Edmunds, Devin Lloyd, Leo Chenal, and Nakobe Dean, all in their prime. Alex Anzalone and Kaden Elliss are older but solid options.
On the defensive line, the Raiders need depth and a true nose tackle. John Franklin-Myers (29) is a borderline fit age-wise, while D.J. Reader (32) is a run-stuffer. Logan Hall is a younger option who can play defensive end. The team may target a nose tackle in the draft.
Safety is the least urgent defensive need. Bryan Cook could command a big payday, which might deter the Raiders. Coby Bryant, Nick Cross, and Jalen Thompson are potential fits.
