The Las Vegas Raiders began reshaping their offensive line Monday by releasing veteran guard Alex Cappa, the team announced. The move comes as the franchise prepares for a busy free agency period and follows reports that the team also intends to part ways with starting quarterback Geno Smith.

Cappa, 31, signed a two-year, $11 million deal with the Raiders last offseason but was not expected to be part of the club’s long-term plans. Despite appearing in all 17 games and making eight starts, he struggled to make an impact on an offensive line that ranked among the worst in the NFL.

Before joining the Raiders, Cappa spent the 2023 season with the Cincinnati Bengals after winning a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he blocked for Raiders minority owner Tom Brady. His release leaves a dead cap charge of $1 million.

The Raiders are expected to target the offensive line heavily in free agency as they look to rebuild one of the team’s weakest units.
