When Tyler Linderbaum signed a record-breaking contract to join the Las Vegas Raiders, he knew he would no longer have to face Maxx Crosby as an opponent. The new center, who inked the largest deal for an interior lineman in NFL history, expressed relief and excitement during his introductory press conference on Thursday at the Intermountain Health Performance Center in Henderson.
Linderbaum, a three-time Pro Bowler, comes to Las Vegas after four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens. He said the opportunity to play under offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak and alongside stars like Crosby and projected No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza was a key factor in his decision.
“Going through the process, I was trying to find a team suitable to my skill set,” Linderbaum said. “I’m excited about what Coach Kubiak is going to build here. Something I think will fit my play.”
The Raiders invested heavily in Linderbaum to help ease the transition for Mendoza, who is expected to be the team’s franchise quarterback. Mendoza has rarely taken snaps from under center, a requirement in Kubiak’s system, making the center-quarterback rapport critical.
“It’s going to take work,” Linderbaum said. “Obviously, Day 1, it’s going to take everybody being on the same page, communication, laying the foundation of what needs to be done and the direction that we want to head.”
Linderbaum will also block for running back Ashton Jeanty, who is poised for a breakout season in Kubiak’s offense. He emphasized the importance of a strong running game and the mindset required from the offensive line.
“I think, as an offensive lineman, that’s got to be your bread and butter, being able to run the football,” he said. “It helps set up for different things, for success. And the O-line play, it’s a mindset.”
Reflecting on his time in Baltimore, Linderbaum credited the Ravens for his development but is eager for the new challenge in Las Vegas.
“I’m very thankful for the four years I had with them developing me as a player,” he said. “But also excited for the new challenge on what’s ahead.”
