Kubiak assembles young Raiders staff with veteran mentors

New Las Vegas Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak is putting together one of the NFL’s youngest coaching staffs, but he’s balancing it with seasoned veterans in key advisory roles. Kubiak, 37, took over for Pete Carroll, the oldest coach in league history, and has hired offensive coordinator Andrew Janocko (37) and defensive coordinator Rob Leonard, both under 40.

The youth movement extends to the top of the staff, but Kubiak has added experienced coaches like Mike McCoy, a former head coach with over two decades in the NFL, and new offensive line coach Rick Dennison, who has been around the league for 30 years. “They should be valuable resources,” Kubiak said of the veteran additions.

On defense, Leonard was promoted from defensive line coach, a role in which he developed players and built a close relationship with star defensive end Maxx Crosby. Travis Smith takes over as defensive line coach after coordinating the Titans’ run game. Linebackers coach Ronell Williams and safeties coach Matt Robinson join a defensive staff that includes senior defensive assistant Al Holcomb and Joe Woods, a former defensive coordinator.

Special teams will be led by 60-year-old Joe DeCamillis, who won Super Bowls with the Broncos and Rams. He’ll be paired with Marquice Williams, 40, who spent five seasons as Atlanta’s special teams coordinator. Kubiak will serve as the primary playcaller, with Janocko serving as an extension in meeting rooms. The staff is expected to mentor a rookie quarterback while surrounding him with explosive skill players.
