Kelley, Denney Lead Tuesday’s Baseball Standouts as Basic, Mater East Dominate

Tuesday’s high school sports slate featured dominant pitching, offensive explosions, and a no-hitter on the softball diamond. In baseball, Basic senior Matthew Kelley went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs to power the Wolves to a six-inning 10-0 win over Coronado. Mater East freshman Ian Denney was a perfect 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs as the Knights routed SLAM! Nevada 11-1 in five innings.

Clark junior Nicholas Maffey tossed a complete-game six-hitter and also went 3-for-3 at the plate in a 5-1 win over Cheyenne. Desert Oasis senior Colin Walker struck out five and allowed six hits over 6.2 innings in a 2-0 shutout of Las Vegas. The Meadows freshman Lucas Salas contributed two doubles and two RBIs in a 15-0 three-inning win over Cadence.

On the softball side, Legacy senior Madison Castellon threw a three-inning no-hitter with five strikeouts in a 16-0 victory over Las Vegas. Palo Verde senior Ava Koenig struck out 13 in a no-hitter as the Panthers beat Shadow Ridge 9-0. Clark junior Sophia DeMonbrun fanned 20 batters in a complete-game two-hitter against Mojave, winning 7-1. Arbor View junior Ava Henderson went 3-for-3 with a home run, a double, and four RBIs in a 15-2, five-inning win over Basic. Bonanza senior Emily Hodsdon drove in four runs with two doubles as the Bengals defeated Western 22-3 in three innings. Desert Oasis sophomore Nolly Newbry went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs in a 17-2, four-inning win over Spring Valley.

In boys volleyball, Basic senior Porter Hughes recorded 19 kills, three aces, and a block in a 3-1 win over Shadow Ridge (25-19, 20-25, 25-21, 25-21). Sierra Vista senior Zaihen Bailey had seven kills, seven digs, and three aces in a sweep of Virgin Valley (25-22, 25-12, 25-13). Arbor View junior Keagan Sugden dished out 45 assists, but Coronado prevailed in five sets (18-25, 25-19, 20-25, 25-21, 18-16).
