Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy is letting it ride. After the New England Patriots upset the Buffalo Bills 23-20 as 7½-point road underdogs on Oct. 5, the Massachusetts native placed a $50,000 futures bet on his hometown team to win the Super Bowl at 35-1 odds. The wager, made at DraftKings sportsbook, would pay $1.75 million if the Patriots hoist the Lombardi Trophy on Sunday.
Portnoy said he saw the team rounding into shape and decided to take a chance. “The thing about Patriots fans, we know Super Bowls, so I saw this team round into shape, went into Buffalo,” he said. “I said, let me take a flier on them.”
During an appearance for Barstool Sports at the Super Bowl in Santa Clara, California, former Las Vegas Raiders coach Jon Gruden questioned the size of the bet. “A $50,000 flier? That’s not a flier. That’s a lot of money,” Gruden said. Portnoy replied, “Well, 35-1 is a flier.” He confirmed he is not hedging the bet. “$1.8 million. No hedge.”
