Coronado dominates winter season, leads RJ Cup boys standings by 20 points

The inaugural RJ Cup standings have taken shape after the winter sports season, with Coronado establishing a commanding lead in the Boys Division I race. The Cougars collected 42 points — 20 ahead of second-place Bishop Gorman — thanks to team state titles in basketball, bowling and wrestling, plus two individual wrestling champions.

Coronado also tops the Girls Division I standings with 38 points, though Bishop Gorman (35) is close behind after winning the 5A girls basketball state title and finishing runner-up in 5A flag football. Faith Lutheran (23) and Shadow Ridge (20) round out the top four.

In the Boys Division II standings, SLAM! Nevada leads with 29 points, fueled by 19 points from wrestling. Clark is second with 21 points. Sierra Vista holds the top spot in Girls Division II with 22 points, one ahead of Clark, after winning the 4A flag football state championship and producing an individual wrestling champion.

The Meadows leads both Division III standings. The Mustangs boys have 22 points after winning the 3A boys basketball title, while the girls sit at 31 points after being the 4A bowling state runner-up.

Points are awarded as follows: 10 for a state championship, seven for a state runner-up, five for a region championship and three for a region runner-up. Teams receive points only for their highest finish. Individual state champions earn one point each; relay titles in track and swimming do not count.

Spring sports will decide the final standings, with region and state championships in baseball, softball, track and field, boys golf, boys volleyball, and swimming and diving.
