The Athletics made a move Thursday, sending right-handed pitcher Mitch Spence to the Kansas City Royals in exchange for right-hander A.J. Causey. Causey, who was in Royals camp as a non-roster invitee, now joins the A’s organization.
Spence, 27, had been designated for assignment by the A’s on Tuesday. He was originally selected by Oakland first overall in the Rule 5 draft before the 2024 season. Over the past two years with the A’s, Spence posted a 3-6 record with a 5.10 ERA in 32 appearances, eight of which were starts.
To clear a roster spot for Spence, the Royals placed right-hander Alec Marsh on the 60-day injured list. The A’s, who are relocating to Las Vegas ahead of the 2028 season, continue to reshape their pitching staff.
