Aces sweep Mercury, claim third WNBA title in four years behind Wilson’s 31 points

PHOENIX — A’ja Wilson scored 31 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the Las Vegas Aces completed a four-game sweep of the Phoenix Mercury with a 97-86 victory in Game 4 of the WNBA Finals on Friday at Mortgage Matchup Center, securing their third championship in four years.

Wilson, who was named Finals MVP for the second time, averaged 28.5 points, 11.8 rebounds, four assists and two blocks per game in the series. She became the first player in WNBA or NBA history to win the scoring title, MVP, defensive player of the year and Finals MVP in the same season.

The Aces trailed 14-14 in midseason but won their final 16 regular-season games and finished on a 25-3 run including the playoffs. Point guard Chelsea Gray had 18 points in the clincher, and Jackie Young added 18 points, seven rebounds and eight assists.

“To be here right now and where we were in May and June, there was a lot of doubt besides in that locker room,” Gray said. “We had confidence in each other. I’m just really proud of how we stayed the course and trusted the process the entire time.”

The Aces are the first team to win three titles in a four-year span since the Houston Comets won four straight from 1997 to 2000.
