Gelof injured as Athletics fall 3-1 to Giants; hitting streak ends at 24

Zack Gelof’s 24-game hitting streak came to a painful end Tuesday night when he was forced to leave the game after being spiked by Matt Chapman. The Athletics second baseman sustained a laceration and contusion on his right hand during a second-inning play, and the Giants went on to win 3-1 at Oracle Park.

Robbie Ray (6-6) dominated over eight innings, allowing just two hits and an unearned run while striking out six and walking four. The left-hander followed up his 6⅓ shutout innings against Atlanta last week with another stellar performance.

Caleb Kilian earned his fifth save by working a scoreless ninth, striking out Henry Bolte with two runners on to end the game.

Jung Hoo Lee opened the scoring with a solo home run off Aaron Civale (5-4) in the second inning, his fifth of the season. After Willy Adames doubled, Chapman drove a ball off the left-field wall, scoring Adames for a 2-0 lead. Chapman was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double, but in the process his spikes caught Gelof’s hand, ending the second baseman’s night.

Gelof had flied out in his only at-bat, snapping his streak at 24 games. He had also scored a run in 13 consecutive games.

The A’s got an unearned run in the third to make it 2-1, but the Giants added insurance in the seventh when Rafael Devers singled home Bryce Eldridge. Casey Schmitt, who went 2 for 4, has now recorded seven straight multi-hit games — the longest such streak for the Giants since Marco Scutaro in 2013.

The Athletics plan to relocate to Las Vegas in 2028.
