William Karlsson skated as a full-contact participant at Sunday’s practice, but the Golden Knights center’s availability for Game 1 of the second-round series against the Anaheim Ducks remains unclear, according to general manager Kelly McCrimmon.
Karlsson, who has not played since Nov. 8 against Anaheim due to a lower-body injury, joined the team for morning skate before Game 6 against the Utah Mammoth — his first public appearance in six months. He practiced as an extra forward on Sunday, a day before the series opener at T-Mobile Arena.
“He continues to progress,” McCrimmon said. “That’s as far as I’ll go with respect to his availability.”
Coach John Tortorella downplayed the significance of Karlsson’s on-ice return, saying Friday, “We’re not even into that.” He added that the practice was about reintegrating Karlsson into the group.
Karlsson appeared in only 14 games this season, logging one period of action on Nov. 8 before leaving for good after an intermission TV interview. The 33-year-old has been sidelined ever since.
“It’s great to have him on the ice,” defenseman Shea Theodore said. “He’s had a long road off the ice getting himself back in shape, but it’s good to see him out there.”
McCrimmon confirmed that aside from Karlsson, the Knights are healthy for the first postseason meeting between the Pacific Division rivals. Defenseman Jeremy Lauzon missed practice after taking a puck to the head in Game 6; the team recalled Dylan Coghlan from Henderson as a precaution.
