Marner’s Two Goals Power Golden Knights Past Mammoth in Game 6

Mitch Marner scored twice and Carter Hart made 22 saves as the Vegas Golden Knights defeated the Utah Mammoth 5-1 in Game 6 on Friday night at Delta Center, clinching the first-round playoff series 4-2.

Vegas advances to face the Anaheim Ducks in the second round.

Brett Howden opened the scoring with 4:58 left in the first period, banging home a rebound off the end boards after Marner’s shot went wide. It was Howden’s fourth goal in the past three games, following his double-overtime winner in Game 5.

The Knights doubled their lead late in the second period when Marner blasted a shot from the right faceoff circle with 44.1 seconds remaining, his first goal of the series.

Utah cut the deficit to 2-1 at 7:41 of the third period when Kailer Yamamoto took a long breakout pass from Mikhail Sergachev and beat Hart with a wrist shot. It was Yamamoto’s first goal of the series.

But Colton Sissons restored the two-goal lead just 1:59 later, pouncing on a rebound after Brayden McNabb’s shot was stopped by Karel Vejmelka.

Marner added his second goal of the game with less than eight minutes remaining, deflecting Shea Theodore’s shot home from the slot. Cole Smith sealed the win with an empty-net goal from inside his own blue line with 3:35 left.

Hart finished with 22 saves, while Vejmelka made 25 stops for Utah.

The Golden Knights’ penalty kill continued to shine, going 2-for-2 on the night. Vegas killed off an early hooking penalty to Ivan Barbashev and a tripping call on Mark Stone.

William Karlsson, who returned to the ice for the first time in nearly six months on Friday morning, did not play but is nearing a return.
