John Tortorella’s message before the playoffs was simple: focus on your own game, not the opponent. The Golden Knights followed that mantra Sunday, beating the Utah Mammoth 4-2 in Game 1 of their first-round series at T-Mobile Arena.
Down 2-1 after two periods, the Knights again rallied in the third. The fourth line provided the spark, with Colton Sissons scoring twice and Nic Dowd netting the game-winner. Both are first-year Knights.
“As a player coming into a new organization, you want to believe you’re brought here for a reason,” Dowd said. “Whether or not that’s playing five minutes or 20 minutes, you want to contribute.”
Utah took a 1-0 lead late in the first period on Logan Cooley’s goal from the right circle. The Mammoth went up 2-1 in the second when Kevin Stenlund’s shot deflected off Kaedan Korczak’s stick. But Carter Hart settled in, stopping everything else. Hart went 6-0 after returning from injury to close the regular season.
“I don’t expect anything,” Hart said. “I just come in and prepare for what the next opportunity is.”
The Knights finished the regular season 7-0-1 under Tortorella, who replaced Bruce Cassidy on March 29. They’ll look to take a 2-0 series lead Tuesday.
