Stone, Eichel power Golden Knights past Jets, 6-2, to set up division-deciding finale

Jack Eichel had a goal and three assists, and Mark Stone scored for the third straight game as the Vegas Golden Knights defeated the Winnipeg Jets 6-2 on Monday at T-Mobile Arena. The win moved the Knights within one point of clinching the Pacific Division title heading into the regular-season finale Wednesday against the Seattle Kraken.

Vegas (38-26-17) has gone 6-0-1 under coach John Tortorella to put itself in position for a fifth division championship in nine years. A point against Seattle would secure the division and home-ice advantage for at least the first two rounds of the playoffs. If the Knights lose in regulation, they would need the Edmonton Oilers to lose to the Vancouver Canucks and the Anaheim Ducks to lose one of their final two games.

“You want to be playing your best during the most important time of the season,” Stone said. “We’ve put ourselves in a spot where we have a chance to win our division, which is something a couple weeks ago wasn’t super obtainable.”

The Jets (35-33-12) were eliminated from playoff contention with the loss. Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck allowed six goals on 28 shots.

Vegas capitalized on a high-sticking double minor to Winnipeg center Mark Scheifele, scoring twice on the ensuing power play. The Knights finished 2-for-7 with the man advantage.

Goaltender Carter Hart improved to 5-0 since returning from a lower-body injury, stopping 21 shots. “We’ve given ourselves a spark,” Stone said. “We’ve been playing better the last couple of weeks. Our game has been building.”
