Burger’s two homers, Eovaldi’s seven shutout innings halt A’s streak

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Jake Burger homered twice and drove in four runs, and Nathan Eovaldi tossed seven scoreless innings as the Texas Rangers defeated the Athletics 8-1 on Monday night, snapping Oakland’s five-game winning streak.

Eovaldi (2-2) allowed just three singles, walked two, and struck out seven, lowering his ERA from 7.98 after a rough start to the season. He threw 53 of 84 pitches for strikes in the series opener at Sutter Health Park.

Burger put the Rangers ahead 3-0 in the first inning with a three-run homer off Luis Severino (0-2) after Evan Carter and Corey Seager drew one-out walks. He led off the third with an opposite-field shot to right, making it 4-0 and recording his eighth career multi-homer game.

Texas broke the game open in the eighth against reliever Jack Perkins. Josh Smith delivered a two-run single and Josh Jung added a two-run double, extending the lead to 8-0. Joc Pederson collected three of the Rangers’ 11 hits.

Lawrence Butler prevented a shutout by homering in the eighth off Luis Curvelo, who allowed one run in two innings in relief. Butler also robbed Seager of a home run with a leaping catch at the right-field wall in the fifth.

Severino lasted six innings, allowing four runs on six hits and three walks while striking out seven. Athletics third baseman Max Muncy left the game after being hit on the hand by an Eovaldi pitch in the fifth inning.

The Athletics had entered the game riding a five-game win streak after a 5-1 road trip that included series wins over the Yankees and Mets.
