NEW YORK — Nick Kurtz ended a 48 at-bat homerless drought in emphatic fashion Sunday, launching a solo shot that gave the Athletics a 1-0 win over the Mets and completed a three-game sweep in Queens.
The victory, Oakland’s fifth straight, moved the A’s into a tie for first place in the AL West. It also marked the first time the franchise has swept the Mets, coming on the heels of a series win against the Yankees — their first in New York since 2016.
Aaron Civale (2-0) scattered four hits over 5⅔ innings, striking out six and walking one. Elvis Alvarado escaped an eighth-inning jam by getting Francisco Lindor to ground out with a runner on first. Joel Kuhnel needed only four pitches for a perfect ninth, earning his second save as boos rained down from the Citi Field crowd.
Kurtz, last season’s AL Rookie of the Year after hitting 36 homers, connected off Freddy Peralta (1-1) in the third inning. His 363-foot drive to right field was his first home run of the season and snapped a drought that dated to his four-homer game against Houston on July 25, 2025. That 48 at-bat stretch was the longest for Kurtz since a 58 at-bat dry spell immediately following that historic performance.
The Mets, playing without injured slugger Juan Soto, have scored just nine runs during a five-game losing streak — all at home. They were also shut out in Friday’s series opener. Jeff McNeil, traded from the Mets to the Athletics in December, went 6 for 13 in his first series back at Citi Field, including a double in the fourth inning Sunday.
Peralta took the loss despite a quality start — his first of the season — allowing four hits and three walks with six strikeouts over six innings.
According to Sportradar, this marks the first time both the Mets and Yankees have lost on five consecutive days.
The Athletics return home Monday to open a four-game series against Texas. Right-hander Luis Severino (0-1, 4.50 ERA) is scheduled to face Rangers righty Nathan Eovaldi (1-2, 7.98).
