Brooke-Lynn Miller has already achieved one of her biggest goals this season. The Coronado senior broke the school record in the 800-meter run, posting a time of 2 minutes, 14.55 seconds — the fastest in Nevada this year.
Miller, who also excels in cross country, competes in events ranging from 200 meters to 3,200 meters. She considers the 1,600 meters her favorite, saying, “I feel super strong and I feel like I know how to pace it really well.”
Coach Tyrel Cooper, a biology teacher at Coronado, praises Miller’s discipline. “Brooke is laser-focused, which is pretty rare out of high school kids in general,” he said. “She has goals, and she’s super focused on them.”
Miller’s training includes attention to nutrition, recovery, sleep, and cold plunges. “I know how important these things are, and I think they give me an edge,” she said.
On the track, she has recorded three second-place finishes in the 400m and two first-place finishes each in the 800m, 1,600m and 3,200m this season. She finished seventh in the state cross country meet and first in the Southern Region in the fall.
Miller’s mental approach is key. “I have a plan before I get on the starting line,” she said. “I am composed, patient and focused on what I want to do.”
Cooper added, “The competition doesn’t phase her. She goes out there with a plan when the gun goes off, and she’s not worried about what anybody else does.”
With the school record in the 800m checked off, Miller’s focus shifts to the regional meet May 2-9 at Cimarron-Memorial, Shadow Ridge and Arbor View. “I feel like we have a really strong girls team this year,” she said. “We want to win the state title as a team. We’re capable, but everyone needs to show up. I want to help with that.”
Cooper is optimistic about the Cougars’ chances after they finished 10th in state competition last year. “We feel we have a team that’s going to be in the conversation, but there are a lot of good teams,” he said.
Next year, Miller will run for California Baptist University. “I’m super excited,” she said. “I like the coaches, and their goals align with my goals. I feel like I’m going to learn a lot, and that group of girls is going to push me.”
