Springs, Bullpen Stifle Yankees as A’s Secure Rare Series Win in Bronx

Jeffrey Springs carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning and the Athletics rode a combined one-hitter to a 1-0 victory over the New York Yankees on Thursday, clinching their first series win at Yankee Stadium since 2016.

The left-hander retired the first 18 batters he faced before issuing a leadoff walk to Giancarlo Stanton in the seventh. Ben Rice followed with a single to right field on Springs’ 84th pitch, breaking up the no-hit bid. Springs (2-0) struck out six, walked two and allowed just that one hit over seven innings.

“I was just trying to execute pitches,” Springs said. “You don’t really think about it until later.”

Justin Sterner relieved Springs and retired Aaron Judge on a groundout to end the eighth with a runner on first. Hogan Harris worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his fifth career save and first this season.

The Athletics scored the game’s only run in the seventh. Max Muncy led off with a triple off the center-field fence and came home on a single by Tyler Soderstrom off Yankees starter Ryan Weathers.

Weathers allowed one run and seven hits in seven innings, striking out seven without a walk while throwing a career-high 101 pitches.

The Yankees have managed just two hits over their last 17 innings and have not scored since plating two runs in the first inning of Wednesday’s 3-2 loss. New York had only three at-bats with a runner in scoring position on Thursday.

It was the first time the Athletics held an opponent to one hit since April 15, 2024, at Texas, and the first time the Yankees were limited to one hit since Aug. 15, 2023, at Atlanta.

The A’s lost designated hitter Brent Rooker to back pain after he was injured on a swing in the first inning.
