NFL coaching carousel: Ravens job vaults to top of seven openings

The NFL head coaching market grew to seven openings Tuesday when the Baltimore Ravens parted ways with longtime coach John Harbaugh, creating what many consider the most attractive vacancy in the league.

Harbaugh, who led the Ravens to a Super Bowl title in 2012 and 12 playoff appearances in 18 seasons, was fired after Baltimore missed the postseason. The Ravens’ opening now tops the list, ahead of the New York Giants, Atlanta Falcons, Las Vegas Raiders, Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns and Arizona Cardinals.

Baltimore boasts perennial MVP candidate Lamar Jackson at quarterback, a strong organizational structure, and a track record of success. The Giants, who hold the fifth overall pick in the draft, believe they have a franchise quarterback in rookie Jaxson Dart and will get star wide receiver Malik Nabers back from injury. Atlanta has young talent on both sides of the ball and plays in a winnable division, though it lacks a first-round pick and has uncertainty at quarterback with Michael Penix Jr. and Kirk Cousins.

The Raiders own the first overall pick and can start fresh with a young quarterback, but recent dysfunction under owner Mark Davis is a concern. Tennessee’s appeal hinges on belief in 2025 No. 1 pick Cam Ward, who showed flashes as a rookie. Cleveland has two first-round picks but a messy quarterback room and salary cap issues. Arizona must decide on Kyler Murray’s future while competing in a brutal division.
