AJ Cole has come to terms with the Raiders on a contract extension that will make him the highest-paid punter in the NFL, according to a person familiar with the situation.
Cole, 29, has been one of the league’s top punters since making the team as an undrafted free agent in 2019 out of N.C. State. The three-time Pro Bowler has averaged 48.6 yards per punt in his six-year career.
Cole, who is listed at 6-foot-4, 220 pounds, was about to enter the last year of the extension he signed in 2021. His new deal is for four years and $15.8 million, with $11 million in guarantees.
Cole, a two-time first-team All-Pro, averaged 50.8 yards per punt last season, which ranked second-highest in the NFL behind only Lions punter Jack Fox (51.0).
Cole’s contract extension is an important piece of business for the Raiders, who have several prominent players set to become unrestricted free agents next offseason. That group includes left tackle Kolton Miller, wide receiver Jakobi Meyers, defensive end Malcolm Koonce and kicker Daniel Carlson.
The Raiders are currently projected to have $94.99 million in salary cap space for 2026, according to the website Over the Cap.
