Raiders to interview Washington Commanders’ Lance Newmark for GM job | Raiders News

The Raiders added a new candidate to their general manager search Sunday, as Commanders assistant general manager Lance Newmark was in Las Vegas for an in-person interview.

Newmark, who joined Washington this season, also spent 26 years in the Lions’ front office. He has experience working with Detroit offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, who have each interviewed for the Raiders’ coaching vacancy.

Johnson is considered the team’s top target.

New Raiders minority owner Tom Brady, who called the Lions’ 45-31 loss to the Commanders in the NFC divisional round Saturday, was in Las Vegas on Sunday as part of the hiring process.

Brady, owner Mark Davis and minority owners Tom Wagner, Egon Durban and Michael Meldman make up the club’s search committee.

The Raiders, after talking to Newmark, are scheduled to hold in-person interviews with Giants assistant general manager Brandon Brown and Chargers assistant general manager Chad Alexander on Monday.

They will be compliant with the NFL’s Rooney Rule, which requires teams to interview at least two external minority candidates while looking for a new coach or general manager, after those conversations. That means the Raiders can then make a hire whenever they choose.

They have already fulfilled their Rooney Rule obligations for their coaching search. The Raiders can also hire Johnson or Glenn whenever now that Detroit’s season is over.

Newmark’s ties with the Lions coordinators make him an intriguing candidate.

Johnson has also interviewed with the Bears and the Jaguars. One way the Raiders have tried to distinguish themselves is offering him input in the team’s general manager hire. Chicago and Jacksonville already have general managers in place in Ryan Poles and Trent Baalke, respectively.

Newmark was part of an impressive turnaround his first season with the Commanders. Washington, which was 4-13 in 2023, went 12-5 behind rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels and reached the NFC title game for the first time since 1991.

There’s still a chance Newmark doesn’t get the job.

Buccaneers assistant general manager John Spytek is considered the favorite in the Raiders’ search. Spytek was a college teammate of Brady’s at Michigan, and was part of Tampa Bay’s front office during Brady’s three years with the team from 2020-22.

Both helped the Buccaneers win Super Bowl 55 over the Chiefs.
