Mitch Marner hat trick helps Golden Knights survive collapse, win Game 3 in double overtime

Mitch Marner scored three goals in the second period, but the Golden Knights needed a double-overtime winner from Tomas Hertl to beat the Carolina Hurricanes 5-4 on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena and take a 3-0 lead in the Stanley Cup Final.

After building a 4-0 lead, Vegas saw it evaporate in the third period as Carolina scored four unanswered goals, including Andrei Svechnikov’s game-tying tally with 6:32 remaining in regulation. The Hurricanes forced overtime, but Hertl ended it at 8:14 of the second extra period.

“It was a game of two halves, I guess,” Marner said. “We came out flying, then they pushed back. But we found a way.”

Marner’s hat trick — his first of the postseason — came on goals at 3:41, 8:52, and 14:29 of the second period, chasing Hurricanes goaltender Frederik Andersen after the third goal. Brandon Bussi entered and stopped all 10 shots he faced in regulation and overtime until Hertl beat him.

Carolina’s comeback started with Jordan Martinook’s goal at 4:24 of the third period, followed by Jordan Staal at 6:27 and another from Martinook at 12:01 to cut the deficit to one. Svechnikov then tied it with a wrist shot from the slot.

Golden Knights goaltender Carter Hart made 29 saves through regulation and overtime, including 15 in the third period alone as Carolina pressed.

“We knew they weren’t going to quit,” Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy said. “But I liked our resolve. We didn’t panic.”

The Golden Knights can clinch the Stanley Cup with a win in Game 4 on Monday in Las Vegas.
