McNabb travels with Knights after taking puck to face; status for Game 3 uncertain

RALEIGH, N.C. — Golden Knights defenseman Brayden McNabb accompanied the team back to Las Vegas on Friday, a day after being struck in the face by a puck during Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final. There was no update on his condition from coach John Tortorella, who said he had nothing further on the 35-year-old.

McNabb was injured midway through the first period at Lenovo Center when a puck hit him on the nose. He skated off holding his glove over his face and was taken to a local medical facility, not returning for the remainder of the game. The Knights played with five defensemen for the rest of the contest, which they lost 4-3 in overtime to the Carolina Hurricanes, tying the series at one game apiece.

“Anytime you see that happen to a teammate, especially to a guy like (McNabb) who is a huge part of this team, a leader, it’s tough,” defenseman Noah Hanifin said. “It’s hard to see that happen to any guy on the ice. We’re just hoping for the best for him.”

Center William Karlsson echoed the sentiment: “He’s a vital part of this team. He’s been that for a long time. He’s been vital for every year. Of course, tough to not have him for the remainder of that game.”

McNabb has appeared in 1,006 NHL games (regular season and playoffs) and held a Knights record of 298 consecutive games before an upper-body injury ended the streak in January. If he cannot play in Game 3 on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena, Jeremy Lauzon is expected to move to the top pairing with Shea Theodore, and Kaedan Korczak would re-enter the lineup.

The Knights and Hurricanes have Friday off, with cross-country travel factored in ahead of the pivotal game.
