The Milwaukee Brewers added depth to their depleted bullpen Saturday, acquiring right-handed reliever Joel Kuhnel from the Athletics for cash considerations. The move comes a day after the A’s designated Kuhnel for assignment.
Kuhnel, 31, posted a 4.21 ERA with four saves across 25 appearances for Oakland this season. He began the year with two scoreless outings for the Las Vegas Aviators, the A’s Triple-A affiliate, before being called up.
The transaction was prompted by an injury to Brewers right-hander Brian Fitzpatrick, who was placed on the 15-day injured list Saturday with a left elbow strain. Fitzpatrick hurt his elbow after throwing one warmup pitch in the seventh inning against Colorado on Friday. Manager Pat Murphy said Fitzpatrick has a UCL strain and will seek a second opinion to determine whether rehab or a third Tommy John surgery is needed.
Kuhnel has appeared in 107 major league games across stints with Cincinnati (2019-20, 2022-23), Houston (2023-24), Tampa Bay (2024) and Oakland (2026), compiling a 5-5 record and 5.51 ERA. He was on Milwaukee’s major league roster twice in 2024 but did not pitch.
The Brewers’ injury list also includes left-handers DL Hall (left pectoral strain), Rob Zastryzny (left trapezius strain), Jared Koenig (left elbow sprain) and Angel Zerpa (left forearm tightness), along with right-handers Brandon Woodruff (right shoulder inflammation) and Logan Henderson (lower back strain). Right-hander Quinn Priester (right thoracic outlet syndrome) was transferred from the 15-day to the 60-day IL.
The Athletics open a three-game series against the Brewers on Monday at Las Vegas Ballpark.
