ARLINGTON, Texas — The Athletics welcomed back Brent Rooker on Sunday, activating the two-time All-Star from the 10-day injured list and slotting him as the designated hitter and cleanup batter against the Texas Rangers. Rooker had been sidelined since April 9 with a right oblique strain, missing 14 games.
The injury occurred when Rooker fouled off a changeup during a 1-0 win over the New York Yankees. The 31-year-old had played in 213 consecutive games before the setback.
To clear a roster spot, the Athletics designated infielder Andy Ibáñez for assignment. Ibáñez, who was claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers in February, appeared in 11 games and went 2 for 17. The A’s have seven days to trade, waive, or assign him to the minor leagues, including Triple-A Las Vegas.
Before the injury, Rooker was hitting .146 (6 for 41) with two home runs, six walks, and eight RBIs. Last season, he batted .262 with 30 homers and 89 RBIs, earning his second All-Star nod and participating in the Home Run Derby.
