Raiders grab run-stuffer Brandon Cleveland in seventh round

The Las Vegas Raiders used their final pick in the draft to add a big-bodied presence to the interior of their defensive line, selecting N.C. State’s Brandon Cleveland.

Cleveland, a defensive tackle, projects as a nose tackle in the Raiders’ new 3-4 base scheme under coordinator Patrick Graham. He has packed on roughly 50 pounds since arriving at N.C. State, transforming from a versatile lineman into a stout run defender who lines up over the ball.

“He’s willing to do the dirty work on defense that will free his teammates up to make plays,” the team noted.

The Raiders are shifting to a 3-4 front this season, and while they won’t use that alignment on every snap, they needed a space-eating tackle who can hold the point of attack. Cleveland fits that role.

He was also offered a chance to play baseball at N.C. State before committing to football full-time and adding the weight.

Grade: A-

There is nothing flashy about this pick, and that is fine. Cleveland fills a specific need as a run-stopper in the middle of the defense.
